This was shot on a Canon GL1 using frame mode, 16:9 mode, auto-exposure and auto-focus and full 20x zoom, handheld. With those settings, the finely detailed vegatation and the fast motion, this is about as bad as it gets when shooting. The only thing that would make it tougher to compress would be some low light noise. The video was captured and edited in iMovie and then opened in Quicktime Pro where it was "unsqueezed" and the size changed from 720x480 to 720x404. It was encoded to Sorenson 3 (the free version included in Quicktime) at 360x202 (the version on the left). The version on the right is the same movie scaled 150% using HTML instructions. What is of note is that how clean the fast motion video looks because of the frame mode: pause the video in the small version and you will see how clean it is (do that with the slow-motion footage). Here are some still frames grabbed from other footage shot with this same setup - these photos were not processed or deinterlaced (they didn't have to be because they were shot with the Canon frame mode): Canon GL1 still frames. |
